Regarding a recent question we received, we are sharing details from a Star Advertiser article published on August 22, 2023. The article reported on a group of cats from Maui and Lanai shelters that were flown to the Oregon Humane Society with assistance from Greater Good Charities and Southwest Airlines.

The news article, written by Nina Wu, details how a tabby cat named Toulouse was among over 160 cats airlifted from crowded Hawaii shelters to Oregon last week, freeing up space for pets displaced by recent wildfires in Maui. Greater Good Charities partnered with Southwest Airlines and animal rescue groups to transport 130 cats from Maui Humane Society and 30 cats from Lanai Cat Sanctuary. The airlift allowed Maui Humane Society to open up shelter capacity to care for nearly 200 pets impacted by the fires. None of the transported cats were directly affected by the fires – they were shelter residents already in need of homes prior to the disaster. Upon arrival in Oregon, some cats were taken in by Oregon Humane Society, while others went to San Francisco area shelters. Toulouse, formerly a Lanai Cat Sanctuary resident in Hawaii, was quickly adopted by Melissa Fisher, his former sponsor. The massive community effort provided much-needed relief to Hawaii’s overwhelmed animal shelters already at capacity before the wildfires.

The Lanai Cat Sanctuary also shared detaiis about the “Lanai Lions” that made the trip to Oregon.
